Indian Temp Job Pay Catches Up with Permanent Pay |

| If you are confused whether to become a temp worker or not, here’s one reason to stop worrying. Salaries of temporary workers, especially at the entry level, are catching up with that of permanent workers, a clear sign of a maturing job market. Globally, temps take home a bigger pay packet than perms. Back home, Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi have emerged as the hottest destinations for temps. An exclusive ET preview of the latest TeamLease salary survey reveals that with a 14% growth in salaries for temps in 2006, the gap is narrowing fast in India. TeamLease is the country’s largest temping company. TeamLease chairman Manish Sabharwal says it’s a reflection of an efficient labour market. “Globally, temps command a premium for the flexibility that they offer to the employer. It was the other way round in India, a sign of an inefficient market. However, thanks to the infrastructure (dedicated temp recruitment firms), there’s a better match between the supply and demand for temps.’’ Moreover, in the past a permanent job was driven by relationship between the employer and the employee. However, it’s more transaction orineted now. “So there are both pull and push factors involved,” he added. The survey shows that even when salary hikes slowed down in IT & ITeS sector last year, the sector continued to be the highest paying sector for temps in 2006. |
