A survey of more than 250 recruitment agencies found that standards of CVs and covering letters were falling sharply, especially among younger applicants and among men in general. Misuse of the apostrophe and the third-person-plural personal possessive pronoun by the careless or ignorant betrayed their applications. Recruiters said mistakes were most likely to come from those aged from 21 to 25, with the worst culprits being those applying for secretarial or clerical work. Many reported a worrying tendency of younger people of both sexes to consider the abbreviated version of English used to send text messages on mobile phones to be suitable for a job application. "Some of the people doing this are university graduates trying to get their first jobs after graduation, which shows such a lack of appreciation of what the world of work is about that it is mind-blowing," said Marcia Roberts, chief executive of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, which carried out the research for the BBC. |
