Schott Builds New Plant in Russia

Schott Pharmaceutical Packaging, a leading worldwide supplier of laboratory glassware and glass bottle manufacturer, has decided to build the company’s first production facility in Russia. The new manufacturing facility is expected to become operational in 2009, producing primary packaging materials. The facility will be based in Bor, employing about 150 employees during the first phase of set-up.

"This move is of great strategic importance to our pharma business," said Schott's chairman, Udo Ungeheuer.

"It will strengthen the company's leading position in laboratory glassware supply and allow for pharmaceutical customers based in the Commonwealth of Independent States of Russia to be served more effectively."

While Schott has been serving the Russian pharmaceutical packaging market for several years, it had been relying on an existing plant in Hungary to provide its glass and other products. Schott’s decision to build a glassware production site in Russia was made due to the strong growth in the premium quality segment in pharmaceutical vials and ampoules. The support of regional and local government officials has played an important role in the decision of where to locate the new facility.
