| In a keynote address at the workshop organised by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) in Muscat yesterday, John Malcolm, managing director of Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), stressed the key role played by good information management in creating an intelligent organisation. “PDO faced data and information management challenges at multiple levels across the full range of company activities,” Malcolm told the international audience. “By implementing state-of-the-art data management, communication and information-sharing systems, PDO is becoming more efficient and intelligent as an organisation. This, in turn, leads to a measurable improvement in our performance.” The workshop, entitled ‘Information management — connecting human capabilities to intelligent fields’, was organised to let managers and other professionals in the petroleum industry learn how best to capture the value of information contained in raw data through new information-management strategies and the adoption of best practices. Malcolm pointed out that data and information management becomes more critical as one moves through a field’s lifecycle, from exploration and appraisal to field-development planning and finally to production optimisation. “The frequency and value of data and information increases as we move from static data during the exploration/appraisal phase to instantaneous real-time data during the production optimisation phase of the field life. To handle the immense amount of real-time data and consume it in time to make appropriate decisions, special IT infrastructure has been implemented at PDO under our ‘Operational Excellence’ and ‘Smart Fields’ initiatives.” |
