600 Finance and Accounting Jobs to be cut at Kansas City Defence offices

The Kansas City Defence Finance and Accounting offices are scheduled to close in August 2008 cutting more than 600 accounting and finance jobs.

However, a recently announced grant of just over $1 million, will go towards helping over 200 accounting and finance staff get career-transition assistance from the Missouri Division of Workforce Development.

The Finance and Accounting facility is experiencing the biggest Kansas City area job loss under the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure plan, a national plan designed to save billions of dollars for the U.S. Department of Defence. The Finance and Accounting job loss is a result of the consolidation of Finance and Accounting Services in order to make an expected saving of $1.3 billion over 20 years.

The Finance and Accounting facility, at 1500 E. Bannister Road, provides accounting services for all branches of the military. The Finance and Accounting Service is to lose 21 offices nationally due to the base closure plan, including one in St. Louis, which is half the size of Kansas City’s. Most of the Finance and Accounting work provided in the Missouri facilities is expected to move to Denver, Indianapolis or Columbus, Ohio.
